Attorney Biography

Even before he went to law school, Robert Newell knew that he wanted to practice criminal law. In law school, Robert made it a point to take every criminal law course offered, and he interned during his summers for the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C. and the Orange County California Attorney’s Office. After admission to the Arizona Bar, Robert went to work in a small firm in Scottsdale, Arizona. He worked exclusively on criminal cases, from the pettiest misdemeanors in city court to the capital murder Baseline Killer case.

In 2012, Robert came to Gillespie, Shields, Durrant & Goldfarb where he continues to represent defendants in courts across Maricopa County and beyond. Robert has appeared in almost every Justice and City court in Maricopa County, as well as frequent appearances in the Superior Court.

The best thing Robert got out of law school was his wife, Natalie, who also is an attorney at Gillespie, Shields, Durrant, and Goldfarb. They met on the first day of law school and have been inseparable ever since. Robert is the proud father of two children, a boy and a girl. In his infrequent leisure time, he enjoys reading novels and watching college football.

Personal Practice Philosophy

Just because you have been charged with a crime does not mean that you are guilty. The State has the Police and the Prosecutor’s Office on their side; you need a zealous advocate on yours. The State will bring all of its vast power to bear against those it accuses of a crime, so it is important to have an experienced professional to guide you through this nightmare. A criminal record will follow you for the rest of your life. It is vital that you do everything that you can to keep that record clean. It can affect your employment, schooling, even your personal relationships.

It is important to gather all the evidence that you possibly can, for the State will be doing exactly that. Even before you have to appear in court, steps can and should be taken to strengthen your case. Again, this is where having an experienced professional on your side will help immensely. I will work with you at every stage of your case. I will weigh every option and explore every potential solution to your legal troubles. Ultimately, you will make the final decisions, but I will do everything in my power to give you the best options to choose from.
